Frequently asked questions
Norethisterone is a prescription-only synthetic progesterone tablet used to temporarily delay a period. It works by maintaining progesterone levels, which prevents the uterine lining from shedding. Your period will typically arrive 2–3 days after you stop taking it.
You'll complete a short online consultation providing details about your health and the dates you'd like to delay your period. A clinician will review your answers and, if it's safe and appropriate for you, approve and issue a prescription. Norethisterone will then be dispensed and delivered directly to your address.
We recommend ordering at least 3–5 days before you need to start taking Norethisterone, to allow time for consultation, approval, and delivery. Norethisterone should typically be started 3 days before your expected period, so please factor this into your timeline.
Norethisterone is not suitable for everyone. It may not be appropriate if you are pregnant, have a history of blood clots, liver problems, certain hormone-sensitive conditions, or are taking certain medications. Your consultation will help determine whether it is safe for you. If it is not suitable, our clinician will advise you on alternatives.
Norethisterone can delay your period for up to 17 days. It is taken three times a day, starting 3 days before your expected period. It is intended for short-term use only and should not be used as a regular or long-term method of period management.
Some women experience side effects including nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting. These are generally mild. If you experience more serious symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, signs of a blood clot (leg pain, swelling, breathlessness), or feel seriously unwell, stop taking the medication and seek urgent medical advice via NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency.
No. Norethisterone used for period delay is not a reliable form of contraception. You should continue to use your usual method of contraception while taking it.
Your period should arrive within 2–3 days of taking your last tablet. Your next cycle may be slightly irregular afterwards, which is normal. If your period does not arrive within a week of stopping, or you have any concerns, contact us for advice.
