Frequently asked questions
Vitamin B12 injections deliver B12 directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for faster and more effective absorption. They are commonly used for people with a B12 deficiency, those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, or anyone experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, or low energy that may be linked to low B12 levels.
You'll complete a short online consultation providing details about your health, symptoms, and lifestyle. A clinician will review your answers to confirm the service is safe and appropriate for you. Once approved, we'll be in touch to schedule your appointment at the pharmacy for your injection.
When you arrive at the pharmacy, a trained healthcare professional will administer your B12 injection. The appointment is quick, typically taking just a few minutes. You'll be asked to remain at the pharmacy briefly afterwards so we can check you're feeling well before you leave.
The service may not be suitable for everyone. It may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions, allergies to cobalt or cobalamin, or are taking specific medications. Your consultation will help determine whether it is safe for you. If it is not suitable, our clinician will advise you accordingly.
This depends on your individual needs and the reason for treatment. Some people benefit from an initial course of injections, followed by maintenance doses every few months. Your clinician will advise on the recommended frequency based on your consultation and how you respond to treatment.
Vitamin B12 injections are generally well tolerated. Some people experience mild soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Less commonly, you may notice itching, nausea, or a feeling of warmth. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or a rash, seek urgent medical attention via NHS 111 or call 999 in an emergency.
Some people notice improvements in energy and wellbeing within a few days of their first injection. For others, it may take a little longer, particularly if levels have been low for some time. Results can vary depending on the underlying cause of your deficiency and your overall health.
No special preparation is required. We recommend wearing clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm. If you have any recent blood test results relating to your B12 levels, it can be helpful to bring these with you, though they are not essential.
